i learned about Marion Stokes, a Philadelphia woman who began taping whatever was on television in 1979 and didn’t stop until her death in 2012.. The 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes she made are the most complete collection preserving this era of TV. They are being digitized by the Internet Archive. (x)
i feel like this is selling her a bit short tbh. It’s not like she was a random woman who decided to tape ‘whatever’ was on television. She was a civil rights activist and archivist, who was extremely concerned about preserving history. She believed that, by taping television, she would be preserving history EXACTLY as it was perceived at the time; she didn’t want the detail in the news to disappear with time. And she was RIGHT.
Like I said, she didn’t just tape ‘whatever’ was on television. It was extremely targeted towards news stations. There were 8 VCRs running at all times in her home. Her life—-and her family’s lives—-were centered around 6 hour blocks, since that was the amount of time that a tape would record for. Her collections were also extremely organized.
thinking over and over and over of that clip from a maya angelou talk about the importance of knowing one another’s history. no matter how brutal no matter how bleak no matter how despairing no matter anything because the only way through it is to go all the way through it. and the only way to build anything with one another is by having gone all the way through it because otherwise there is no connection. whats a connection worth that’s built on ignorance? sustained by ignorance? “only equals can make friends” she says. only equals.
got cornflakes for fried chicken & the back of the box has its own recipe. easy as pie. “rinse chicken tenders with cold water and coat with crushed kelloggs corn flakes cereal.” and then cook. no binding agent. no seasoning. nothing but a pile of flavorless chicken with a side of the extra-dried-out cornflakes that fell off it. serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce. doesnt even say serve hot. Serve Warm. wouldnt wanna get too wild with it. truly this is the spirit of cornflakes
You ever have a random thought that’s not intrusive, but somehow simultaneously so instinctive and so detached from your regular everyday life, that you vaguely figure it was probably just an ancestral spirit possessing you for a second?
I was baking an apple pie for fun, freehanding cardamom by vibes alone. And a thought pops into my head, must not be wasteful with them, spices are expensive. And I had to halt right there for a second. Why would I feel financial guilt about the amount of seasoning in homemade goods, when I spend money on far more frivolous shit every single day? My own weight in cinnamon would cost less than my rent.
Thank you for your concern, Maarit from the 1600s, but trust me, we’re good. I can measure this cardamom with my heart and not the scale.
I woke up one morning very annoyed for like a good 15 seconds because I had to find my portuary that morning.
Took me a second to realize I don’t know what that is so I probably didn’t need it.
I ended up looking up the word and it was an old word for a portable breviary, which I also had to look up the meaning of, which is a “book containing the service for each day, to be recited by those in orders in the Roman Catholic Church.”
It was a Tuesday morning and I am a trans atheist who hasn’t been to church since I got kicked out of Sunday school at 3yo.
i cant help but notice that the chocolate chips cookies you brought to the potluck yesterday had bad vibes. so i went through your cabinets while you were sleeping and checked out the chocolate chips you used. i mean they looked innocent on the surface, they were even fair trade certified. but i just couldn’t shake that itching sense that sometning was off. i infiltrated the chocolate company’s headquarters by posing as IT support. and you know what I found? the guy who designed the labels got a dui in 2007. so it turns out my instincts were right and you’re a terrible person.
Glados cant help but notice your cookies have bad vibes
i actually dont give a shit if hamas did everything and worse that israel accuses them of it still doesn’t justify killing 30000 random civilians
this is literally the least radical position you could have btw it’s literally just normal fucking morals. every day i live in disbelief that people are saying “it’s complicated”. there’s nothing complicated about saying “killing 30000 civilians including children, journalists, doctors, and human rights officials is bad”
I don’t even care who fucking wins the presidency this year look at this
This makes an INCREDIBLE difference!!!! For fuck sake go vote!!!!
A few years back a Republican won my house district by six vote. Now she’s talking about making it illegal to protest the Gazan genocide. Pay attention to Congress
For the record, this is EVERY TWO YEARS. Every two years the entire US House and 1/3rd of the senate are up for election. Every. Two. Years.
And your local elections are just as important and many of those are in years without a federal election.
